Human DNA testing has become so popular that it was only a matter of time before that curiosity was extended to our four-legged friends. After all, nothing should benefit man that shouldn't also benefit man's best friend, shouldn't it?

Tests on your dog's DNA are performed for a different purpose than human DNA testing, which is usually done in order to find out more about your ancestry and family history. The primary objective of dog DNA testing kits is to identify which breeds your mutt contains in its genetic makeup. There's a question that's been bothering some dog owners and guardians for some time, but it's not that important in the end, to be perfectly honest. Due to the lack of inbreeding, a mixed-race mutt has fewer genetic problems than an all-purebred dog.

It is important to note, however, that another goal is rarely discussed. In addition to identifying genetic diseases or disorders, DNA tests for dogs can detect genetic mutations in your companion animal. There is a possibility that your dog could carry one of these diseases or develop a full-blown disorder. There are DNA tests that can rule that out - or expose diseases before they spread
