How does Frontline Plus for Dogs work?

The active ingredients in Frontline Plus are Fipronil and  S-methoprene, which combine to kill fleas at all stages of the flea life cycle.

  • Fipronil works to kill quickly, by attacking their exoskeleton (that’s why it is safe for animals like dogs and cats and humans, who don’t have exoskeletons!) Fipronil also kills ticks, in the same way.
  • S-methoprene prevents flea pupae and larvae from growing into breeding adults, and stops flea eggs from hatching.

The great combination of these active ingredients mean that you quickly kill the fleas that are biting your dog today, as well as the ones that otherwise would be biting tomorrow - fleas are killed within 24 hours, and you get 30 days protection.  (A quick note - the dying fleas may be hyperactive, as the fipronil is killing them, so you may see more fleas on your dog immediately after application - it is the dying dance of the flea!)

Frontline Plus kills ticks - your dog needs tick protection!

Don’t believe for a minute that your dog doesn’t need tick protection - ticks are found year-round, in every part of America.  Adult ticks can feed in the fall and even into winter, so colder weather doesn’t always mean fewer ticks.   You can find further information about the types of ticks that live in your region, and the diseases that these transmit to dogs and to humans, on the US Government’s Department of Health & Human Services Center for Disease Control website

Ticks are dangerous - they transmit diseases that can make your dog (or you!) very sick, and can be fatal.  Some of the most common diseases include Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and babesiosis. You need to take action to kill ticks and protect your dog, and remove as many ticks from your environment as possible.

Frontline Plus kills the following ticks:

  • Brown Dog Ticks - found throughout the United States - these ticks can bite dogs or other mammals, including humans, and transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
  • Lone Star Ticks - found in the southeastern and eastern US - again, these very aggressive ticks transmit diseases and viruses that affect pets and humans
  • American Dog Ticks - found east of the Rocky Mountains and in limited areas on the Pacific Coast, and can also transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever
  • Deer (or blacklegged) Ticks - these have now been found in every US state except Hawaii, but are most commonly found in the eastern and upper mid-western states, and are found all year when temperatures are above freezing.
  • Western blacklegged Ticks - found along the Pacific Coast of the US - these transmit Lyme disease.

(Frontline Plus also kills the Australian Paralysis Tick for up to 2 weeks - this tick is not found in the USA).

Once you apply Frontline Plus to your dog’s skin, ticks are killed within 48 hours, and your dog is protected for 30 days.

How do I apply Frontline Plus for Dogs?

Frontline Plus for Dogs is applied as a topical spot-on product, with the small pipette of liquid being applied to the back of the dog’s neck, onto the dog’s skin.  Frontline Plus for Dogs spreads from this single point of application by a process called translocation, rapidly covering the entire dog and localising in the hair, on the surface of the skin and in the sebaceous glands of the dog.  These glands act as a reservoir, continually replenishing Frontline Plus for Dogs on the dog’s skin and hair - this is how it works consistently for 30 days, even if your dog gets wet or has a bath! (You should only apply Frontline Plus to a dry dog, and it is highly recommended that you don’t bathe your dog for 48 hours after applying Frontline Plus to your dog, to allow time for it to be fully absorbed.)

Frontline Plus kills fleas on your dog within 24 hours, and ticks within 48 hours.  Because the active ingredients are “wicked” onto the dog’s hair, fleas and ticks don’t have to bite your dog for the Frontline Plus to work - ticks and fleas that come in contact with your dog’s hair will die.  That’s great news for those with dogs who suffer from Flea Allergy Dermatitis, when even a single flea bite can cause major irritation and distress to your dog!

Frontline Plus is safe for use on puppies weighing more than 4.4lbs and older than 8 weeks of age, and is also safe for breeding, pregnant or lactating animals.
