CanadaVet - HeartWorm medication

Heartworm Medication for your Dog without a prescription? Yes, at www.CanadaVet.com !

When it comes to heartworm medications for your dog, it can be difficult to choose the right one. Does the medication treat intestinal worms as well as heartworm prevention? Is your worming treatment regime and product compatible with your dog's flea and tick treatment?

At CanadaVet, we want to make it easy for you to select the right heartworm medication for your dog, that gives your dog (and your family) the best protection, is easy to use and is affordable.  Because we source genuine products from around the world (e.g. from Australia), you can buy the same heartworm medications that you know and trust (like Advocate, HeartGard Plus, NexGard Spectra, Sentinel Spectrum and Simparica Trio) from www.CanadaVet.com without a prescription.

Should I give my dog heartworm medication?

Short answer - YES! Heartworm disease in dogs is serious, and can result in severe lung disease, heart failure or damage to other organs - it can kill your dog!  The FDA reports that whilst heartworm is most common on the East Coast from New Jersey to the Gulf of Mexico, it has been reported in every state in the US.

The best way to ensure that your dog doesn’t have heartworm is to ALWAYS give a heartworm preventative medication to your dog.  A dog that has always been protected against heartworms is unlikely to have developed heartworms - your dog can start on heartworm preventative medications like HeartGard Plus from only six weeks old.

All dogs should be tested for heartworm infection before starting a preventive program.  If a dog hasn’t been on a lifetime regime of heartworm preventative medications, then a heartworm test is needed, prior to commencing (or recommencing) preventative medications - talk to your vet to ensure that your dog is free of existing heartworms before giving your dog any heartworm medication. This is because heartworm medications do NOT kill adult heartworms, but only the immature heartworms called microfilariae.

Most popular Heartworm Medications

Here’s some of our most popular heartworm medications at CanadaVet -

  • Simparica Trio - one of the most modern and effective treatments on the market, this monthly chew prevents heartworm using the same active ingredient as vets can now give as an annual injection, but also kills fleas and ticks, and treats hookworms and roundworms.
  • Nexgard Spectra - a once-a-month chew that prevents heartworm and also kills fleas and ticks, and intestinal worms including roundworms, hookworms and whipworms
  • Milbemax - these small tablets prevent heartworm and  treat roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm (including hydatid tapeworm) if given monthly
  • Interceptor Spectrum - these beef-flavoured tablets prevent heartworm disease and control roundworm, whipworm, hookworm and tapeworm, and are given monthly

CanadaVet sell a full range of heartworm medications, and so you can be sure that you select something that (together with your dog’s flea, tick and intestinal worm protection) gives your dog protection against all the nasties!  If you don’t know what your dog needs, after looking through the dog worming treatments on our website, call our friendly award winning Customer Service Team!

Monthly, daily, tablets, chews and topical spot-on heartworm medications - what heartworm medication is best for your lifestyle and your dog?

When you choose the best dog heartworm medication , think about these things:

  • What protection does your dog already have from his other treatments (flea and tick treatments)
  • How good are you at remembering dog treatments - is it easier to always treat your dog on (say) the first of the month, and does this fit in with the treatment regime for fleas and ticks (is it easier for you to give your dog all her treatments at the one time of month?) or would you rather give your dog a daily tablet, like Dimmitrol?
  • How good is your dog at taking tablets?  Whilst some dogs will take anything (wrapped in some chicken or other treat!), others make giving them a tablet a very unpleasant experience for both you and your fur-baby! For these fussy dogs, consider whether a flavoured chew or even a topical spot-on treatment is best!
  • How old is your dog? Some products, like Milbemax, are safe to give puppies from 2 weeks of age - when our little friends are at their most vulnerable.  Others can be used by pregnant dogs - look at products like Interceptor Spectrum chews.

Why don’t I need a prescription to buy heartworm medication from www.CanadaVet.com?

All the heartworm medications products that www.CanadaVet.com sells are official versions.  For example, our Heartgard products are manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health, the same manufacturer who makes the product for the USA/Canada.

Heartworm medications like Heartgard are sold around the world, and the formula for the drug in every country is exactly the same.  However, different governments have different rules on what drugs need a prescription.  For example, in Australia, you can buy most heartworm preventative medications  without vet prescription.

As heartworm medications are  “over the counter” drugs in the country they are shipped from (e.g Australia), and are not for the treatment of serious conditions, we consider that they fall within the FDA guidelines which allows US residents to import over the counter pet medicines for personal use (i.e. not for resale).

Whilst the formula for the drug is exactly the same, and the product is genuine (having been made by the same manufacturer), the packaging have minor differences - the instructions for use and safety directions are in English, the color coding of the pack sizes are the same as in the USA but you should note that the sizes are written in the metric system and care should be taken that the appropriate dose is given.

We serve many tens of thousands of customers in the US and elsewhere who receive their order without issue.

You get a genuine product, made in the same factory to the same standards, but you save a lot of money, and you can get heartworm medication without a vet prescription.
