Keeping Fleas Off Your Pet

Fleas are a problem for both you and your pet. The unfortunate reality is that all dogs and cats get fleas. What is important is that you keep the number of fleas to a minimum. Considering one adult flea is capable of laying 400 eggs per week, this can be difficult to do. Luckily, you have many tools on your side to help keep fleas away from you and your pet, with some being better than others.

Using Flea Collars

Flea collars can be useful, though they are probably the least effective of the tools in your arsenal because they do not really work on the fur throughout your pet’s body. In addition, they do not actually kill fleas and they can be irritating to your pet.

Trying Oral Medication

There are a number of special tablets available that can be useful in controlling fleas. As with flea collars, however, oral medications do not actually kill fleas. Rather, they prevent the female fleas from being able to lay healthy eggs, thereby breaking the life cycle. This ultimately causes the fleas to die off. For the most part, oral medications for flea control need to be given to your pet twice per week.

Spot Ons Do the Trick

The best way to prevent fleas on your pet is to use spot ons, which are spread onto the back of your pet’s neck. They then spread throughout your pet’s fur on their own using the natural oils in the fur. Most of these products are effective for one month and are very convenient to use and to administer to your pet. Advocate for Dogs and Advocate for Cats are two types of spot ons that work well and preventing and killing fleas. These products also help control other pests, such as hookworm, intestinal worms, heartworm, lice, and whipworm.

The most important step in getting rid of fleas is prevention. Once they invade your pet and your home, it is difficult to get rid of them. Be sure to place proper preventative measures in place and you and your pet will be sure to be itch free.
