March 2015: Top Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Pet

Springtime is all about starting afresh so it’s the perfect time of the year to engage in some spring cleaning!  If you’re going to be vacuuming, dusting and washing your way around the house why not take a few simple steps to ensure your four legged fur-friend is being looked after as well; by reading our top tips for washing your pet.

Tips for Washing Your Dog

  1. From a young age get your dog used to being washed and dried and make sure it’s an enjoyable experience with lots of praise and some delicious treats!  And remember to use quality, natural soap free products, like PAW 2 in 1 Conditioning Shampoo or Fido’s Everyday Shampoo, designed specifically for use on dogs.  Dogs have a different PH level to humans and should not have human shampoo or washing liquids used on them.

  2. A general rule of thumb is to wash your pet every one to four weeks however frequency of washing can be dependent on many factors including coat type, if they are an inside or outside dog, skin issues and the weather.  Regular shampooing helps to keep your dog clean, its coat healthy and allows for regular inspection for possible skin irritations and parasite infestations.

  3. If the weather is warm enough, grab a towel, shampoo and head outside for an open air scrub.  Otherwise, depending upon the size of your dog, the laundry sink, the bath or even the shower are great places to start your washing regime.  Ensure the water is warm, not too hot, as hot water can dry out their skin.

Tips for Washing Your Cat

  1. Use a shampoo that is designed for use on cats, such as Killyptus Showring Shampoo, as many ingredients found in human products are toxic to cats.  Try and make the experience enjoyable and calm and be prepared in advance by have everything you need in easy reach before you start bathing.  Some cats like to be immersed in water, some don’t, whilst some like to be held to keep them calm.  Do what works best for you and your cat.

  2. Cats benefit from regular bathing for numerous reasons.  Firstly, bathing helps reduce the amount of loose hair and reduces hairballs.  Secondly, cats actually have a very greasy coat so regular bathing helps knots and mats from developing in their fur.  Many cat owners think cats are self-groomers however all they are doing is licking themselves all over.  Nothing compares to a good shampoo and blow dry!

  3. Cats are unpredictable!  Try and keep your cats claws trimmed so when bathing they are unable to scratch using their claws if they want to try and escape.  Regular trimming will also keep them healthy.
