What’s the Difference Between Fleas and Ticks?

As fur parents, you’d want your pets to be parasite-free and enjoy their life. But fleas and ticks are just one of the most persistent and annoying insects that can ruin that idea. Fleas and ticks love the summer season and they thrive in a humid environment. And although they are common parasites, it’s easy to get confused in identifying which insect you see on your pets. So, here’s a quick run down to help you identify these parasites better and protect your adorable pets.

Fleas

This blood-sucking parasite is a small wingless insect that can live up to 100 days on your pets. Fleas are very tiny and they have flat bodies. They are black or reddish-brown in color but jump quite high so spotting them on your pets is difficult. These insects can carry diseases and affect your pet’s overall health. Therefore, how would you know if your cat is infested with fleas? Flea Dirt. It looks like specks of dirt on your cat’s fur and you can look for swelling or redness on their skin as a sign of infestation. Once your cat is suspected to have this parasite, contact your vet as soon as possible. You must then give them proper treatment and monthly preventatives to avoid these pesky parasites coming back. You have a variety of options on how to get rid of fleas like shampoos, oral meds, and spot-on treatments.

Ticks

Ticks are much easier to spot on your cat's body. They can look a bit like spiders with their eight legs that swell up when they’re sucking blood. Ticks bite into your cat’s skin and can stay for days until they finish feeding. Imagine how uncomfortable and painful that feels for your pets. Hence, it’s important to check your cat since they may not show changes in their behavior. Since ticks are larger than fleas, you can look for them on your cat’s fur easier. Usually, they are attached in darker and hidden areas (behind ears, belly) so make sure to sweep thoroughly over your cat if you suspect they are present. If you find one, don’t panic and avoid pulling it out immediately. Put some gloves on and use a tweezer to pull it out carefully. Call your vet or purchase effective tick treatments that are proven safe and effective for your cats.

The Importance of Flea and Tick Products for Cats

If left untreated, these parasites can cause lots of serious health issues for your pets. Avoid spending thousands of dollars for something that you can prevent with specially formulated flea and tick products for your cats. Listed below are the possible diseases that these pesky parasites may carry:

  • Tapeworms - When a cat ingests a flea that carries tapeworm infection, chances are high for them to get tapeworms too. These are internal parasites that live in the intestines of your pets. Once these parasites settle in, they grow fast and will start to steal your cat’s nutrients. When left untreated, cats can suffer abdominal pain, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and itchiness. Don’t let these parasites get into your pets. Get rid of fleas and ticks with the best brands available at CanadaVet today.

  • Murine typhus - Fleas can also carry this type of disease if they have contact with infected rats before infesting your pets. Once they hitch a ride into your cat’s fur and bite the skin, fleas can pass the disease into the bloodstream. Symptoms of the infection may include nausea, fever, lethargy and swollen lymph nodes.

  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever - Unlike other diseases transmitted by these pesky parasites, humans can’t get rocky mountain spotted fever or RMSF from their pets. But, humans can get bitten by infected ticks. Symptoms are vague like muscle and joint pain, fever, vomiting, diarrhea or even swelling of the face and legs.

  • Anaplasmosis - This is a type of tick-borne disease that affects your pet’s platelets and white blood cells. Usually, you can notice some symptoms several weeks after the bite. It includes fever, lameness, joint pain, lethargy, coughing, seizures, vomiting, loss of appetite and diarrhea.

  • Haemobartonellosis - Now this is a type disease that can come both from fleas and ticks. Once it infects your cat, it targets their red blood cells. That means it can lead to sudden weakness and anemia.

  • Bartonellosis - Unlike other diseases that come from fleas, your pets don’t get it from their bites. Your cats can contract bartonellosis from fleas poop or dirt-like feces. The infection may not get to them but still, it can cause infections like eye inflammation, gum health concerns, mouth diseases, and they can even develop heart disease. Always make sure that your cats are free from fleas and ticks to avoid this. Treatments and preventives are now available and you can get them here at CanadaVet.

  • Tularemia - This type of tick-borne disease is commonly called the Rabbit Fever. Four types of ticks can carry this disease and the usual symptoms are fever, depression and lymph nodes. Cats can also experience abscesses, nasal discharge, and lethargy. Unfortunately, there is still no vaccine for this disease but you can manage the complications and use flea and ticks medications.
