April 2016: What’s The Difference Between K9 Advantix, Advocate (Advantage Multi) and Advantage?

As a pet owner it can sometimes be a little overwhelming when it comes to choosing which product is best going to protect your pet from those nasty parasites. Depending on what protection you’re after, whether that be from fleas, heartworm or both, there are various options available to protect your pet.

Bayer’s range of preventative products, K9 Advantix, Advocate (Advantage Multi) and Advantage, each treat and protect from different types of parasites. To help you identify which product does what, we’ve provided a helpful breakdown to show the similarities and differences between the three products.

  • K9 Advantix is an easy-to-use spot on application that contains an ingredient called Imidacloprid, which kills adult fleas, as well as flea larvae on dogs for up to a month after application, and kills lice for up to 6 weeks after application.
  • Contains Permethrin, an ingredient which repels and kills ticks, mosquitoes and sand flies for up to a month.
  • Registered for the treatment and control of deer ticks, American dog ticks, brown ticks and lone star sticks.
  • Permethrin is highly toxic to cats, so K9 Advantix is only for use on dogs.
  • In households where dogs and cats socialize closely it is recommended that you don’t use K9 Advantix due to the serious harmful effects that this product has on cats.
  • K9 Advantix does not treat heartworm or gastrointestinal worms. Combine with Heartgard Plus for heartworm protection and Drontal All-Wormer for gastrointestinal worm protection.

  • Advocate for Dogs and Advocate for Cats is a multi-purpose medication that combines Imidacloprid with Moxidectin.
  • Treats fleas, as well as prevents heartworm, hookworm and roundworm in dogs and cats, plus whipworm in dogs.
  • Controls other external parasites such as lice and ear mites in cats, and mange mites and lice in dogs.
  • Application is monthly to the skin at the back of the neck.
  • Advocate does not treat ticks or tapeworm. It is recommended to worm with a tapewormer (such as Drontal) tablet once every 3 months.

  • Like Advantix, Advantage for Dogs and Advantage for Cats is an easy-to-use spot on application that contains an ingredient called Imidacloprid, which kills adult fleas as well as flea larvae on dogs for up to a month after application, and kills lice for up to 6 weeks after application.
  • Unlike Advantix, Advantage does not contain Permethrin, the ingredient in Advantix that repels and kills ticks, mosquitoes and sand flies.
  • If you live in a household where dogs and cats socialize closely, it is recommended that you use Advantage.
  • Advantage does not treat ticks, heartworm or gastrointestinal worms. Combine Advantage with Heartgard Plus for heartworm protection and Drontal All-Wormer for gastrointestinal worm protection.
