Fleas & Ticks are Coming

Newsletter February 2008

While fleas and ticks can be a problem for your dog or cat year round no matter were you live, they are particularly a concern in the warmer months, so now is the time to start preparing!

Prevention of these annoying and sometimes fatal parasites is important and if you haven't already, it's far better to start a preventative regime before the warmer months, rather than waiting until your dog actually has fleas.

There are many flea products available for your dog and cat including topical (spot on) products, shampoos, dips, powders, and sprays and some people advocate using "old fashioned" home remedies however clinical tests have shown that the most effective forms of control are leading veterinary brands Frontline Plus, Advantage, Advantix (also known as K9 Advantix) and Revolution. You can buy all these products at up to 40% off RRP at our online store.

Any one of these products will ultimately save you more time and money and spare your pet from irritation and pain. Fleas are also known to cause medical conditions, such as flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworms, hair loss (from scratching), and other skin infections usually caused from the scratching. If the fleas become unbearable or get out of control, your dog could become anemic from blood loss, especially in puppies, and could possibly die if the anemia is severe. Which of these products is best for your pet depends on a number of factors, so if you are unsure as to which product to use, ask your vet and never use two flea products at the same time without consulting your vet.

Remember, it may be necessary to treat the environment such as carpets and bedding as well as your dog or cat.

In certain areas, ticks can also become transmitters of harmful or even fatal diseases such as Lyme disease (which can also be contracted by humans from tick bites), Ehrlichiosis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Although fleas peak in the summer months, deer ticks are most common in the spring and fall. Which of these products is best for your pet depends on a number of factors, If you are unsure whether there are ticks in your area, consult your vet or local kennel club or animal shelter.

Remember, Frontline Plus, Advantage, Advantix (also known as K9 Advantix) and Revolution are all effective at treating fleas but prevention before an infestation is the key to keeping your dog and your family healthy year round
