Heartgard Plus chewables containing the active ingredients Ivermectin and Pyrantel, are given monthly for the prevention of heartworm disease caused by the heartworm worm - Dirofilaria Immitis and for the control of roundworms and hookworms in dogs. Heartworm is spread by infected mosquitoes and the Heartgard Plus eliminates the heartworm larvae that infect the dog during the previous month, preventing them from maturing into adult worms. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially deadly disease. Prevention is preferable to treatment, as treatment is very complex and expensive.
