Heartgard Plus chewables containing the active ingredients Ivermectin and Pyrantel, are given monthly for the prevention of heartworm disease caused by the heartworm worm - Dirofilaria Immitis and for the control of roundworms and hookworms in dogs. Heartworm is spread by infected mosquitoes and the Heartgard Plus eliminates the heartworm larvae that infect the dog during the previous month, preventing them from maturing into adult worms. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially deadly disease. Prevention is preferable to treatment, as treatment is very complex and expensive.

Directions for Heartgard Plus (Heartguard) chewables
Heartgard Plus chewables are given monthly, preferably year round, to prevent heartworm disease. The usual dose of ivermectin in dogs up to 25 lb is 68mcg, which is one chew from the blue pack, for dogs between 26 and 50 lb the dose is 136mcg, which is one chew from the green pack and for dogs between 51 and 100 lb the dose is 272mcg, which is one chew from the brown pack. Dogs over 100 lb are given the appropriate combination of the chews.

The side effects of Heartgard Plus chewables are rare at the recommended dosage. Heartgard Plus chewables have a wide margin of safety for all sizes and breeds of dogs. They are approved for use in puppies as young as 6 weeks, small dogs, pregnant or breeding bitches, stud dogs, and at the correct dose can be used in Collies and related breeds.
