Side effects of Heartgard Tablets
This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it. Heartworm testing should be performed prior to the start of prevention therapy. If the animal is off ivermectin for 6 months or less, start the medication and test after 6 months since microfilaria, which take 6 months to mature, may result in a positive test result.
Dogs which have a high level of circulating heartworm at the time of administration can get a mild diarrhea, this would normally only last a day or two and the dog will normally still be fine. This means that the medication is actually doing it's job.
