Directions for Atopica Capsules

The usual dose of Atopica is 2.5 mg per pound. At the start of a course of treatment Atopica is given once daily around meal time until satisfactory improvement is seen. This usually takes between 4 and 8 weeks. Once the signs have been brought under control the dosage can be reduced to once every second day and possibly to once every 3 to 4 days depending on the response. For dogs between 4 and 6.5 lbs give one 10mg capsule. For dogs between 6.6 and 9 lbs give two 10mg capsules. For dogs between 9.1 lbs and 16lbs give one of the 25mg capsules. For dogs between 16.1 and 33 lbs give one of the 50mg capsules. For dogs between 33.1 and 64 lbs give one of the 100mg capsules. For dogs between 64.1 and 79 lbs give one of the 50mg capsules and one of the 100mg capsules and for dogs between 79.1 and 121 lbs give two of the 100mg capsules.


Side effects of Atopica Capsules

This medication should not be used in animals allergic to it or other cyclosporine medication. Do not use Atopica in dogs suffering from renal disease, or where there is a possibility of gastro-intestinal ulceration, bleeding or blood dyscrasia. Avoid use in dogs less than 6 months of age. Atopica may affect the action of other medications such as ACE inhibitors, cimetidine, cisapride, digoxin, griseofulvin, ketoconazole, metoclopramide, metronidazole, non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, phenytoin, phenobarbital, potassium and corticosteroids such as prednisone, cortisone, dexamethasone or triamcinolone.
