What Affordable Dog Accessories Should I Buy?

A good idea before welcoming home a new puppy or dog is to make a list of everything they will need in their new home. The more you have prepared for your new family member before they arrive home, the easier it will be for them to adjust and the faster they will feel comfortable. Some of the quality dog accessories that your new pet may need include:

  • Feeding Supplies

Probably your first concern when bringing home a new puppy or dog is what to feed them. Pick a food that is healthy for their life stage (e.g. puppy, adult, senior). Choosing between wet and dry food often comes down to personal preference. Dogs that are not inclined to drink much water should be fed wet food to ensure they remain hydrated. It is also important to choose a quality food bowl as there are several options available on the market. In addition to standard food bowls in plastic, metal, or ceramic, we also carry:

  • To prevent regurgitation of food when dogs eat too fast, slow feeder bowls are available
  • If you need to distribute mealtimes throughout the day, use a timed feeder bowl
  • or puzzle balls to make treat time more exciting
  • Likkimats - to keep your pooch entertained longer

  • Somewhere to Snooze

Even if your dog prefers to sleep on the floor, a bed is an important purchase. You can choose from a variety of different sizes and materials for your dog's bed. Make sure to choose the right size for your dog, because even the smallest puppies can grow into very large dogs! Dogs that live in colder climates find heating pads a real treat, and they can be very beneficial for dogs with arthritis. In the warmer months, raised beds will allow cool air to circulate underneath and around the dog. The raised beds are also designed to keep fleas off, allowing your dog to rest from pesky parasites without worrying about them.

  • Collars

A collar is one of the most essential dog accessories. It serves as a means of identification. As well as microchipping, you should attach a tag with your contact information to your dog's collar so that they can be reunited with you if they go missing. Dog collars can also be fashionable. Collars come in a variety of styles and colors, whether they are adorned with diamonds or spikes. The main types of collars are:

  • The everyday collar should have an identification tag attached at all times. This collar should be sturdy and durable. While some owners prefer quick-release collars, other dogs prefer traditional latching collars.
  • Bark collar - An electronic collar powered by batteries that emits a noise and vibrates when your dog barks, or releases citronella to discourage further barking.
  • The head collar is used for dogs who pull on walks. A padded collar applies gentle pressure to a dog's head when they pull, hopefully discouraging them from pulling more.
  • Other types of collars include choke chains, chain slip collars, and metal prong collars or pinch collars. The RSCPA does not recommend the use of prong or pinch collars for training, preferring to recommend more human practices such as positive rewards training.

  • Leads and Harnesses

Walking your dog is much easier with a harness that fits properly. Instead of all the pressure of a leash pulling on your dog's neck, a harness distributes it evenly across the chest. As the lead attaches at the front of the dog, certain harnesses also discourage your dog from pulling as they cause the dog to turn when they pull.

  • Muzzles

The muzzle may look scary, but it is often necessary when dogs are scared or injured to prevent them from biting people who are trying to help them. Muzzles fitted correctly should not interfere with a dog's ability to pant, drink or eat small treats. When buying a collar for your dog, you may need to measure the width around their snout while their mouth is closed as well as the distance between the end of the nose and the point where their nose starts to slope up their head. Please refer to the individual product descriptions

  • Outdoor and Adventure Accessories

In order to prevent injuries and keep dogs safe while exploring the outdoors, they need special accessories. When exploring the great outdoors, your dog's paws are protected by dog boots from the heat of the ground and any sharp objects. Water-loving dogs should be fitted with a life jacket that must be worn when on a boat or another type of watercraft. Ideally, you should always have your dog wearing a life jacket when they are near or in water, but some owners will leave it off if the dog is only swimming in shallow water. We also carry doggy rashies to protect your pup from the sun when they enjoy the great outdoors.
